Residuum

A valuable mineral that does not naturally form on Aoterra. It is often extracted for its powerful and often explosive energy, and it can also be used as an amplifier of magic. Its technical relationship with The Weave is still largely unresearched, but there have been many theories proven and disproven over the years, with no particular one reaching the level of known law.

In the past, residuum was seen as the "divine mineral", since the only original source of residuum seemed to be divine relics such as the Source Relics and Archaic Relics. In the past, magic items with their own source of energy had to be created by repurposing the residuum found in items created by the gods.

The first bit of residuum to have been processed was when Archmage Garuum had successfully disenchanted a Source Relic called the Solar Cronix, separating a highly concentrated deposit of residuum from the amulet. Archmage Garuum discovered the power behind residuum and helped invent the method of deconcentrating/concentrating and repurposing residuum. Presently, residuum concentration is measured in grades from S, A, B, C, and D (S equates to Legendary power level, D to Common). All Source Relics are grade S.

Recent discoveries have revealed an abundance of residuum ore scattered throughout the Astral Sea, a phenomenon that is largely unresearched, but it is theorized that the constant movement of energy across the Astral Sea causes lost refuse and other materials to be broken down into energy particles, which then start to clump back together to form the residuum clusters that litter the expanse of the sea.

Raw residuum can be refined into Refined Residuum through a process called Resynthesis.
